Objective

Historical context helps the reader better understand the plot and purpose of a story by providing necessary background information the reader may or may not be familiar with. The objective of this lesson is to understand the time and circumstances in which this story is told.

Lesson

1) Discussion. "Q Clearance" takes place in the mid-1980's during a Republican administration. Lead the class through an information session being sure to cover who was president in 1986. Discuss the political tensions that existed amongst the political parties in the United States. Be sure to include the socio-political tensions, especially surrounding the Women's Movement, the rebound response to the Women's Movement, Communism, the "Communist Threat" and the notion of secret sleeper spies living in the United States.
