On a Saturday afternoon in June, Jack Kennison gets in his sports car and drives to Portland to buy a gallon of whiskey. He goes there because he does not want to bump into Olive Kitteridge at the grocery store in Crosby where he lives.

2. What type of person was Jack when he was younger?

When Jack was younger, he was a tall, good-looking man with no gut. He would stroll around the campus at Harvard, and people would watch him. His students looked at him with deference. At department meetings people found him to be intimidating.

3. What does Jack remember about his wife and his gallbladder surgery?

Jack remembers being told that when he had his gallbladder out, his wife had stood at his side in recovery. Another patient told him when he woke that his wife, Betsy, was gazing at him in love when he was unconscious. When he later asked Betsy about it, she said that she was hoping that he would die.
