Part 1 of this memoir is entitled "Paradise." The objective of this lesson is to understand how paradise is described by the author and what it would mean to be exiled from that paradise.

Lesson

1. Class Discussion: What is the author's idea of paradise? How does the author feel she is exiled from paradise? What made the city and apartment of Eva's childhood so special? Was it the physical size or the people? Usually, people who are exiled are not able or not allowed to return; is this the case with Eva? If not, then why does she feel that she is exiled? Isn't she free to return at any time? Why would she not return? What would stop her?
