Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Explain how Ichabod's classroom becomes a "battleground." The types of battles the two combatants employ are very different. Compare and contrast the methods both men use to engage in battle for Katrina. Be sure to use examples from the text to support your answer.

Essay Topic 2

The author's descriptions of Ichabod Crane, even the usage of his surname, conjures the images of a bird. Why does the author want the reader to see Ichabod as birdlike? Is it because he is flighty? Or does his gossiping with the women in town one of "cawing" like a raven? Describe why and how the author continues to connect Ichabod to a bird and what purpose the author does this.

Essay Topic 3

Explain how the introduction of the story, the papers being found in those left by a dead man, gives credibility to the story. Does having an actual source support the author's suggested tone that what is revealed is fact. Why or why not? Does it help the author's purpose because the man is dead and no longer around to dispute the claims laid out in the rest of the story?
