Journey Into the Whirlwind is set in the Soviet Union during the reign of Joseph Stalin, in the 1930's and 40's. The objective of this lesson is to look at setting.

Lesson

1) Homework: Students will research and write a paper on the Soviet Union during the reign of Stalin. Who were its people? What was the government? Why did the purge occur?

2) Group Work: Each group will present a short piece on Soviet Union during the reign of Stalin to the class. The presentation will come from student's homework research project.

3) Class Discussion: Would you like to have lived in Soviet Union during the reign of Stalin? Why or why not? What type of person would you most like to be in Soviet Union during the reign of Stalin?
