Lesson 1 (from '1933')

Objective

Klemperer served in the German armed forces during World War I and spent time on the front-line during combat before becoming sick and being sent home. The purpose of this lesson is for students to explore what serving on the front lines was like during World War I.

Lesson

1) Find and play newsreels and/or news radio announcements and/or news articles regarding key World War I battles that involved German troops.

2) In-class research: Divide the class into 3 groups. Have each group research the following:

a) Typical non-chemical weapons used on the front lines in WWI.

b) Typical combat and defense methods used on the front lines in WWI.

c) Typical chemical weapons used in combat during WWI, as well as their effects.

Have a spokesperson from each group give a five-minute presentation on the results of their research.
