· Deven is overjoyed when he sees his old friend Murad while buying cigarettes before class.

· It is Monday, Deven must teach, but Murad wants Deven to spend a half hour with him.

· Deven notes Murad’s teeth are black from betel and begins to feel less happy to see him.

· As they walk across campus students smirk at the sight of their professor with his friend, whom they have seen before.

· Deven tells Murad he can spend time with him after class.

· Murad suggests Deven take him to the “best restaurant in [his] great city” (10) since he has come all the way from Delhi just to see Deven.
