Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel. Sherman Alexie is a Coeur d'Alene Indian who grew up on a reservation in Spokane, Washington. The characters in "Happy Trails" are Coeur d'Alene Indians as well. Students will explore his background, where he is from, how old he is, when the story was published and how it was receive by the public. Students will consider how the information they gather might impact their reading of "Happy Trails."

Class Discussion: Who is the author of "Happy Trails"? Where is he from? When was he born? What year was "Happy Trails" published? How was this work received by the public? What other works has the author written? How might the author’s background influence your reading of the book?
