Objective

Objective: The Hairy Ape is a 1922 expressionist play written by the American playwright, Eugene O'Neill. The aim of this lesson is to introduce the play.

1. Class discussion. Have the students heard of the play before? What do the students expect from the book? Why do they expect these things to happen?

2. Brainstorm Eugene O'Neill's past works with the students. Do his books share similar themes? Divide the students into pairs and assign them each a book to research. On their return, discuss what the students expect from The Hairy Apes?

3. With the students look at the questions O'Neill asks in the opening chapter of the novel. Divide the students into pairs and ask the students to write down five questions O'Neill poses in the opening chapter.
