Lesson 1

Objective: Part 1 The students will be able to make justifications.

1) Possible Activities:

* Have the students write a paragraph justifying why Catherine feels the way she does about her parents.
* Conduct an oral debate on the issue of giving birth out of wedlock.
* Utilize Catherine's father's treatment of her as the basis for a discussion or writing assignment for the students. Have them justify why he is correct.


Have the students write five sentences justifying why they should not have homework in high school.


Provide the students with a controversial topic related to their own lives (i.e. changing the driving age, a school rule that they dislike, etc..) Have them write several different justifications for or against the issue.
