Lesson 1

Objective: Prologue | Chapter 1 The students will be able to identify the main idea of a section/chapter/novel.

1) Possible Activities:
* Have the students hold a class discussion to determine what they believe is the main idea of this chapter (family history and life history).
* Have the students work in pairs to develop definitions, similarities and differences between the concepts of main idea, central message and theme.
* Have the students create a pictorial representation of the main idea of this chapter (i.e. create a family tree type picture of his family).

Homework

Have the students write a few sentences supporting or denying that the main idea of this chapter revolves the importance of understanding where someone comes from, to be able to understand the person themselves.

Challenge

Have the students research their own lineage and report on it to the class or just to the teacher.
