Objective

Chapter 1, This War is a Crusade

As students may or may not have covered the Civil War (or may not have covered it in detail) in another class at this time, the first lesson will define prerequisite knowledge and expand upon that knowledge where necessary in order to set the stage for McPherson's book.

Lesson

1. Writing assignment: Students will write a one-page journal discussing what information they already know about the Civil War and will then compare and contrast their knowledge with a partner.

2. Video: Students will watch a short video (available with a basic internet search) that recaps the Civil War to fill gaps in recollection.

3. Class discussion: What were the main causes of the Civil War? On what causes do people tend to focus and why? Was slavery the primary reason or not? How much influence did economic factors have on each side's decision...
