Objective

Chapter 1, No Return

Vacek is an inmate of the concentration camp, but he has some power and privileges that he uses as he see fits. Vacek's personality, morals and character will be explored.

Lesson

1. Characterization: Students will write adjectives to describe Vacek as a person (for example, unsympathetic, ruthless). The adjectives will all be written on a white board. Students will decide if any of the words do not belong on the board and discuss why. The adjectives remaining will be discussed as to why they describe Vacek.

2. Class Discussion: The class will discuss Vacek's morals or lack thereof. Is he insane? Does he enjoy the murders? Why or why not? Does he believe he is one of the SS? Or does he realize his status as a prisoner?

3. Written Assignment: Describe Vacek's way of thinking. What are his goals in the camp? How does he...
