Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1, The House of Doña Juana)

Objective

In the beginning of Eva's life, she was abandoned by her father and her mother was left to take care of the family without any support. Today's objective is to discuss how a person's upbringing can influence the rest of their lives and what they choose to do.

Lesson

1. Have each student make a list of three things that have happened in their life which have impacted them today.

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss whether they think one's background always influences a person in their lives.

3. As a class, have the students discuss the possible ways in which Eva's background might impact her. What are some negative impacts this background might have? Is there any way to guarantee that a less than happy upbringing will still yield a positive future?

4. Homework: Have each student write about a time when they felt their upbringing held them...
