Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. Characters

Basie - This American sailor is a player and tries to make money off of the war by trading anything he can.

Father - This a serious man who tries to remain calm in the face of threats to his firm from the Communist Labor Unions, his concern for his work with the British Residents Association, and his fears for his family.

Frank - This character is an American sailor who takes the portholes from beached ships in the river.
