Design a place to live
Have each student put themselves in Ish's place at the beginning of the book. What would they do after the virus attack? Would they live in the same house, as he has done, and scavenge for food? Have each student decide on where they would live and design their ideal living place. Have them take into consideration such things as food storage, water sources, protection, etc.
Start a tribe
Split the class into groups and have each one invent a "civilization." What will be the government structure? Will they have laws? Why do they need laws? Who will be the leader? Who decides? Where will they live? What will they eat? Who will do the work?
