Objective

The Preface makes it clear that man's time on Earth has ended. The objective of this lesson is to examine the effectiveness of revealing the end to the reader first.

Lesson

1) Class discussion: How does the Preface begin? Who populates the Earth? Who rules the Earth? Where is man? What has happened to man? How does the editor explain what happened to man? What does the editor say about the rest of the novel? How many tales will it take for man to disappear from Earth? What are the reactions to the decline of man in the Preface?

2) Think-Pair-Share: Working in pairs, students will respond to the following: How do you feel about knowing the end of the novel first? Students should share their answer with a partner and then explain to the class what their partner's feelings were.
