Objective

"Breakfast on Pluto" opens with Christmas morning and the truth about the pastor's dark past. The objective of this lesson is to analyze the juxtaposition presented in Chapter 1.

Lesson

1) Writing assignment- In their journals, students will respond to the following prompt: What type of Christmas mass do you expect Father Bernard to give when you read the beginning of Chapter 1? Students should have a chance to share their responses with the class.

2) Class discussion - When does this chapter take place? What does the Christmas morning look like? What things does Father Bernard consider? What has gone wrong with his mass? Why has this happened? Where is Patrick today? How is his mother? Where do they live? In what conditions do they live? How does this past affect Father Bernard emotionally? What does he plan to do?
