Lesson 1

Objective: The exposition is thought of as the introductory material presented in the beginning of a story. It can include descriptions of people, places, and any other aspects that help create the atmosphere for the story. Eleanor's exposition gives the location, the subject, and the circumstances of her story. The purpose of Lesson #1 is to explore the exposition Eleanor gives her readers as a way of opening her book.

1) Class discussion: What is the purpose of an exposition and why is it important? What did Eleanor include in the exposition of this particular book? Could she have included anything else that would have helped the reader relate to her situations?

2) Small group activity: Divide the class into groups of 3-4 and ask them to summarize the exposition. Does Eleanor's exposition include anything that may foreshadow events later in the book? Ask them to write down their findings...
