Objective

Objective: The novel Anthills of the Savannah is set in the late 1980s in the fictional African nation of Kangan, based in part on Achebe's home country of Nigeria. This lesson will enable students to learn more about Chinua Achebe and the history of Nigeria in order to better understand the events and message of the novel.

1) Group activity: Form groups and have each group focus on researching one era of Nigerian history (e.g., the era of kingdoms; the coming of the British and the beginning of colonial rule; independence from Britain; the turbulence and civil war in the 1960s; and finally, the 1970s to the 1980s). Consult several sources in the library or on the internet and gather information; then, each group should briefly present to the class what they have learned.
