1. Describe the two settings in Chapter 1.

Chapter 1 begins in heaven, where the gods, demons, and spirits are having a dinner party in an elaborate red building. Down below is Flower-Fruit Mountain, where the Monkey King rules. This is a place where flowers bloom all year and where the fruit is especially delicious, and it is filled with happy monkeys.

2. How did the Monkey King become king?

The Monkey King was born long ago, from stone, and one of the first things he did was rid Flower-Fruit Mountain of a Tiger-Spirit that was haunting the place. This caused monkeys to come from all over the world to live there, and he became their king.

3. What things has the Monkey King studied and mastered?

The Monkey King has studied and mastered kung fu, "thousands of minor disciplines," and the "Four Major Heavenly Disciplines." These disciplines are "Fist-Like-Lightening," "Thunderous Foot," "Heavenly Senses," and "Cloud-As-Steed" (10-11).
