Objective

Objective: The novel begins in 1936, flashes back to 1922, then moves forward to present day 1936 to continue the plot. The objective of this lesson is to understand the literary technique of flashbacks.

1) Lead the class in a discussion of literary flashbacks. Begin by defining what a flashback is and asking the students to explain how Chapter 1 uses the technique of flashback. Can the students explain why an author would choose to use flashbacks? What do they understand about the narrator, Jack Burden, and the protagonist, Willie Burden, that they would not have known without the benefit of the flashback? Do the students find it confusing to manage a flashback? How else could the author have provided the necessary background information to the reader?
