Objective

Chapter 1

The student will be able to predict from the characters of Strachan and Macfadden how the plot of the novel will run into complications.

Lesson

Classroom activity:

1. Opening teacher lecture centers on Nevil Shute, the author, and the setting of Australia, Malaya (now called Malaysia), and mid-twentieth century England. Discussion of moral values of the time and in the different places is imperative to understanding some of the plot developments in the novel.

2. Have the students read in class the first six pages of the novel, ending at Strachan's slow train to Ayr.

3. Following the reading, discuss the following: (1) mood of the beginning of the novel; (2) Life situation of Strachan at the time he is notified of the death of Macfadden; (3) Strachan's wartime experience in London.
