Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

Chapter 1

The student will take notes on the background of the book, A RUMOR OF WAR.

The student will define the purpose behind Caputo's writing the book.

Lesson

1. The teacher will lecture on the book giving some historical background on America's involvement after the French pull out of the former French Indochina. Students under the age of 35 will possibly not have much knowledge of the era.

2. Although Caputo was briefly an anti-Vietnam war protester after leaving the Marine Corps, his book is not a statement for or against the war. He simply writes in descriptive terms what it was like for the men on the ground. Discuss in class the ideas students have regarding participation in actual combat. Talk about the physical and psychological toll that active combat might be expected to take on a human being.

Homework:

Read Chapter 1 before the next class meeting.
