Objective: Chapters 1 through 8 "A Deepness in the Sky" is science fiction novel by Vernor Vinge which was published in 1999. The story acts as a prequel to Vinge's 1992 novel, "A Fire Upon the Deep", although only one character, Pham Nuwen, appears in both narratives. "A Deepness in the Sky" won the 2000 Hugo Award for Best Novel. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book and will research and discuss author Vernor Vinge and "A Fire Upon the Deep".

1) 1) Teacher Lecture: Introduce the students to the book and author. "A Deepness in the Sky" is a science fiction novel by American Author Vernor Vinge and has received numerous awards, including the 2000 Hugo Award for Best Novel.
