Lesson 1 (from Alcestis)

Objective

"Alcestis" - This is the first play in the book. Some of the students may be unused to reading plays. In order to make the transition to reading a play easier, this lesson focuses on the differences between a narrative and a play.

Lesson

1. Class Analysis - As a class, compose a list of differences between a play and a narrative. This list should include obvious differences (characters only speak in plays, there are not the descriptions in plays that there are in narratives, narratives have more background information and can express the thoughts of characters as well as their actions and words) and some subtle differences (in a narrative the author describes the setting, in a play it is done in the scenery). Post this list in the front of the class where everyone can see it.
