Time travel is commonly used to tell stories and show themes. Every story comes from a past, and this story combines both the past and the future to create the present. We learn that people and events are all intimately connected by the past, present and future.. The time travel device helps frame the story and allows viewers to put everything into perspective.

The Terminator and the T-1000 have returned from the future to try to find John and Sarah. The Terminator is the same as the previous model that attacked Sarah. We see that with time, new developments can be made, and the rebels have figured out how to rewire the older models so that they can be used for good rather than evil.
