Clock

The clocks in both Laura and Waldo's apartments symbolize two different things. The hidden compartment in the clock is symbolic of the hidden places in a man's soul, such as the place where Waldo harbors the desire to kill Laura. The clock face, especially when shown in the last scene, symbolizes Waldo's desire to stop time and keep Laura all to him self forever.

Waldo hides the gun in Laura's apartment in the hidden compartment beneath the clock. After accidentally killing Diane rather than Laura, he knows he must hide the evidence and that is the most convenient place to hide it since no one would ever think to look there. Waldo also has a hidden place in his heart that would allow him to want to kill Laura. He asks as her best friend but hides his true motivations from everyone.
