Context

Laura tells the story of the alleged murder and subsequent investigation of Laura Hunt. Waldo Lydecker narrates the story and tells us exactly what has happened up to the point Mark McPherson, a detective, shows up in his apartment. Laura was murdered, but no one can seem to figure out why or by whom.

As different people are interrogated we begin to learn that every man falls in love with Laura - her fiancé, Shelby; her friend, Waldo; and finally Mark, the detective. When Laura shows up alive, the mystery thickens. As Mark continues to investigate, he discovers that Waldo is actually obsessed with Laura, and he tried to kill her to keep her from belonging to anyone else.
