To What Extent Did the Peace Settlement at the End of World War I Satisfy the Participants?

Summary:   A complete overview of the treaties that ended World War I, their conditions, and the participating countries' opinions on them show that the treaties satisfied nobody. The harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles, the most important of the treaties in the peace settlement, eventually contributed to the causes of World War II. The treaties left the defeated nations angry and the victorious nations receiving much in the way of material spoils but failing to achieve lasting peace.


Many countries took part in the Peace Settlement, and since all them had different aims it was difficult to create one that would satisfy everyone's needs.

There was a large difference between the Victors and the Defeated Powers. The last ones lost a lot, while the victors didn't get everything they wanted, but they had substantial power in deciding how the peace settlement was going to be like. There happened to be conflicts and disagreements even between the Victors.

The overall peace settlement was divided in different treaties, each one signed by the victors and a defeated power. Each one was named after a French province, which shows to what extent France contributed in coming up with the treaties.
