Arthur Miller wrote the play "A View From the Bridge" in 1955 when he was living in New York. In the 1950's New York was a very showbiz and glamorous place and was known as the capital of the world, it attracted thousands of illegal immigrants from all over the world, especially from countries like Italy. The people who came to America were looking for a better quality of life which is the case for the two submarines in the play. Miller uses various techniques and storylines to create tension such as the threat of the discovery of the two illegal submarines, Marco and Rodolpho, the taboo subject of sexual tension between Eddie, Rodolpho and Catherine and also by the play's engaged narrator Alfieri.
