The Good Person of Szechuan Overview

Berlois Brecht’s play The Good Person of Szechuan was written between 1939-1943 in the midst of World War II in Europe. The play was debuted in Switzerland in February, 1943 and was first performed in English in 1948. The story is hailed as a modern parable about the difficulties of being a morally upright person in the midst of depravity and greed. It follows the life of a prostitute, Shen Teh, as she tries to temper her giving, caring nature with the practicality of making ends meet in Szechuan, China.
