Spirit (Poem) Overview

"Spirit" is a lyric poem by American poet Maggie Nelson. It originally appeared as part of the collection Jane: A Murder in 2005. This collection tells the story of the murder of Nelson's aunt Jane that occurred near Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1969. It was widely praised as a collection that opened up the potential for poetry to communicate whole narratives usually reserved for prose. "Spirit" describes the speaker's sense of wonder and discomfort she feels over being told that Jane's spirit lives on through her.
