Maggie Nelson's On Freedom: Four Songs of Care and Constraint is a nonfiction work which interrogates contemporary notions of freedom in four key contexts. Each of Nelson's sections, or songs, regards freedom through the lens of an alternate cultural sphere. Over the course of the text, Nelson considers what it means to possess have freedom of artistic expression, freedom of sexual expression, freedom of chemical experimentation, and freedom of self-sacrifice. By examining freedom as an ongoing process rather than a fixed event, Nelson reaches expansive and hopeful conclusions. The text explores themes including, sex and sexuality, drug use and addiction, and the climate crisis.
