Annemarie, who is nearing her fortieth birthday, also fears her life has no purpose because Eva wants to attend a live-in training program, Annemarie's boyfriend has yet to propose to her. Even if they did marry, Annemarie cannot have more children. Themes in the novel include priorities, overcoming the past, and the difficulties with relationships.
