Randa Abdel-Fattah's novel Does My Head Look Big in This? is told from the first-person perspective of Amal, a 17-year-old who identifies herself to the reader as a young Australian-Palestinian-Muslim girl. When the novel opens, Amal has just made the landmark decision that she wants to wear the hijab all the time. The only problem, Amal tells the reader, is that she attends a posh private school with little diversity in its student population, so her decision is sure to create some waves. Over the course of the narrative, Abdel-Fattah introduces themes such as compassion, strength, and the power of hope.
