Summary and Analysis

This Halloween tale begins in Brooklyn at 3:00 p.m. At a baseball game, everyone is going crazy as the baseball players get into a huge fight. On the other side of the river, though, people are falling in love. Two reporters pop in to see if there is anyone famous applying for marriage licenses, and suddenly they spot Mortimer Brewster, a famous critic who is outspoken against marriage. They think they're mistaken, but they wait around for a few minutes to be sure.

When the clerk can't hear him, Mortimer must yell his name. The reporters begin to chase him, and he and Elaine, his fiancye, run out. Mortimer pulls Elaine into a telephone booth and begins to yell at her. He has spent his whole life writing against marriage, and he doesn't want to mess up his reputation.
