A major and his aide came to Bartle's platoon area. The major's aide yelled for the platoon to come to attention. The lieutenant was sleeping and Sterling was out as well. When the aide called for attention again, Sterling roused himself, saw the LT sleeping, and he said, "At ease" (152). Then the men began to mill around as the major spoke. Only Sterling maintained military bearing and was attentive. The major gave orders, gave medals of gallantry, and commendations. Only Sterling's promotion caused any comments, because it was accompanied by a Bronze Star.
