At the beginning of Chapter 4, what were conditions like for Bartle?

Through the daylight hours Bartle and the other men took turns on watch. They would sleep for two hours, and then they woud nod off behind their rifles. They saw no enemy. They were exhausted. The only thing they saw was the city, which appeared to be a blurred patchwork of shapes.
