What does Alec reveal to be the cause of the destruction in the flashback in Chapter 19?

Alec reveals the disaster to be sun flares. Sun flares, Alec reveals, mean radiation and extreme heat. Alec also reveals that both Mark and Trina fill out the group that he has formed, and they need to leave the subways before water fills them up as the polar ice caps rapidly melt.
