Why does Sam ask Emma to move out of their Cambridge apartment in the novel, One True Loves?

Unable to live with someone who does not love him fully, Sam asks Emma to leave their home until she has decided what she wants. She does not return to the apartment until after she chooses Sam over Jesse.
