Why was Ato surprised that Eulalie wanted children?

The couple initially decided that they would postpone having children. Eulalie, however, begins to think that having a baby would be a good idea after facing the pressure put on her by Ato's family, as well as the loneliness and alienation she has experienced since arriving at Ato's village.
