Austrian-born American physicist and geophysicist who was one of the guiding leaders of the International Geophysical Year (1957-58). Singer was an early proponent of using rockets for geophysical research and the launching of artificial satellites in the late 1940s. (He published Geophysical Research with Artificial Earth Satellites in 1956.) Other research by Singer dealt with the origins of cosmic rays, geomagnetic storms, and auroras. His IGY research would make a fundamental contribution to the study of the history of the solar system as well as astrogeological theory.
