1042-1105
French nobleman and leader in the First Crusade (1095-1099), who established the Latin County of Tripoli in the Holy Land. Known variously as Raymond IV and Raymond de Sainte-Gilles, Raymond took part in the successful attacks against Antioch and Jerusalem in 1098 and 1099 respectively. During the period 1100-1105, he fought to prevent fellow crusader Bohemond I (c. 1050-1111) from expanding southward. Almost alone among all crusaders, Raymond maintained favorable relations with the Byzantine Empire.
