French inventor who, along with engineer René Higonnet, developed the first practical, high-speed phototypesetting machine. Moyroud earned a degree in engineering at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Métiers and served as an officer the French military from 1936 to 1940. He briefly worked for LMT Laboratories, a French subsidiary of ITT, but left in 1946 to devote himself to research on photocomposition. In 1948 Moyroud and Higonnet introduced their phototypesetting machine, the Lumitype (also called the Photon), in the United States. The first book to be composed with this device was The Wonderful World of Insects (1953).
