French mathematician who made important contributions in many areas of mathematics. In his early years, Leray was active in algebraic topology, where he discovered spectral sequences. Later, Leray worked on the mathematical aspects of fluid mechanics, and many of his discoveries retained their impact for over 60 years. Later, his work on the theory of complex variables was of great significance in that branch of mathematics.
