American physician who with Paul Parman developed the first rubella vaccine in 1966. Rubella, also known as German measles, was a common disease that affected many children and adults prior to introduction of the vaccine. In pregnant women rubella is particularly dangerous as it causes a wide variety of birth defects in developing fetuses.
