Italian mathematician also known as Marol Marul. Ordained as a priest, Maurolico served as head of a mint, supervised fortifications at Messina, was appointed to write a history of Sicily, and wrote about Sicilian fish. He also wrote a number of works on Greek mathematics, translating many ancient writings, and restoring some damaged texts. He worked on geometry, the theory of numbers, optics, conics, and mechanics. Maurolico published a method for measuring the Earth, and made detailed studies of the 1572 supernova.
