American neurobiologist noted for his investigations of neuron structure and function, and for his studies concerning the effects of drugs on neural activity. Bloom received his doctor of medicine from Washington University in 1960. He is the author of various technical publications and books, and has received numerous awards. Since 1983 he has worked at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.
