Arab mathematician and astronomer who collaborated with Abul Wefa in determining the longitudinal difference between Baghdad and Kath (in modern Uzbekistan). A student of both Hindu and Arab astronomy, al-Biruni's writings provide an overview of advances made by both civilizations. He also wrote an astronomical encyclopedia and in other works discussed weights and measures, specific gravity, and gemology.
